Enhancing Efficiency in the Operating Room

As one of the most important areas of a hospital, operating rooms (ORs) contribute to both workload and revenue. Enhancing the workflow in the OR not only helps increase turnover but also reduce post-operative complications, improving patient-centred outcomes and delivering greater patient satisfaction. Moving forward, the EsySuit is being expanded to support almost all procedures in orthopaedics and is currently in the design phase of turning the EsySuit into a SmartSuit by directly linking it to a digital platform.

With the product named EsySuit, MedEnvision has succeeded in being the first and only company to develop a product that standardises the sterile draping procedure. In a traditional OR setup, drapes are used to limit contamination of the surgical wound, surgical instruments, and the surgeon’s hands. Requiring an average of 15 minutes per patient, the current draping procedures are not only time consuming but also increase the chances of sterility failures due to the involvement of multiple healthcare personnel. With EsySuit this time is reduced to three minutes. And taking into account that one minute of OR time in the U.S. costs at least $75, EsySuit manages to save potentially $900.

On the other hand, MedEnvision’s Gripper allows surgeons to control the retractor without extra help from an assistant.

This also enables nursing staff to be deployed more effectively during a surgical procedure. With the Gripper, a surgeon can determine the amount of force with which the retractors are placed and how long it stays in place. Thus, allowing surgeons to remain 100 percent focused on the patient during the operation while the nursing staff is free to perform other activities since they do not have to keep holding the retractors. Further, MedEnvision’s ESY solution offers a cross-disciplinary efficiency model that aims to support a surgeon and their team in standardising all aspects of the OR workflow. The solution helps optimize the surgical process and thereby reduces procedure costs, improve working ergonomics and minimize surgical trauma.
